THE EKULO STORY

The Stream That Never Runs Dry

The Ekulo story is a testament to what resilience, discipline, and vision can achieve.

In the bustling markets of the 1980s, long before Ekulo became a recognised name in Nigeria’s retail and distribution landscape, it began in the most modest way, a one-room store run by a determined young man. The founder started with the sale of electrical parts and generators, a trade that was largely seasonal. When demand slowed, income slowed too. Rather than remain idle, he spent the off-season assisting other traders in the market, learning the ropes of commerce while building relationships. What seemed like small acts of diligence were quietly laying the foundation for something far greater.

During one of those days in the market, he met an importer who brought female handbags from overseas. Seeing an opportunity, he asked to be supplied with goods as well, but the importer insisted on cash payment. Without the funds to import, he continued to focus on his work, showing up daily with dedication and discipline. His persistence did not go unnoticed. One day, the importer asked what time he opened his shop. “5:30 AM,” he replied. The following morning, the importer visited the shop at that exact time and found him already at work. Impressed by his reliability and resilience, the importer agreed to supply him with goods. That moment marked the beginning of the importation journey, which officially started in 1981 with the importation of just one container.

As the business grew, so did the space it occupied. What started in a single-room store soon expanded into a bigger two-room space as demand increased and opportunities multiplied. Over time, the growth continued beyond the market, eventually leading to the establishment of the Victoria Island office in Lagos, which today serves as the company’s head office. From there, Ekulo continued to expand its footprint, opening offices in other parts of Nigeria that now serve as strategic hubs supporting the company’s growing operations and distribution network.

The philosophy behind the business was deeply influenced by the wisdom of the Chairman’s father, Chief Eliazam Okonkwo-Ogbu na eche ndo. He often advised that it is better to build a business that may grow slowly but steadily than one that thrives only in seasons. Those words reminded him of a stream called Ekulo in his hometown Ichi. Unlike other streams that swell during the rainy season but dry up during the dry season, the Ekulo stream flows steadily all year round. Inspired by its quiet consistency, he named the business Ekulo, with the vision that it too would remain reliable and sustainable in every season.

Today, that vision has become a reality. From a humble one-room shop and a single container of imported goods, Ekulo has grown into a thriving enterprise distributing over 1,000 products across Nigeria, spanning food, beverages, cosmetics, and everyday essentials. With more than 500 employees across the country and operations that continue to expand, the company has become a source of livelihood for many families and a trusted partner to countless businesses.

The Ekulo story is a testament to what resilience, discipline, and vision can achieve. From one man’s determination to build something that would endure through every season, a business was born that continues to serve families, communities, and Nigeria at large, just like the stream that inspired its name, flowing steadily and never running dry.
